Cooper describes working with Russell as "very unorthodox". It's almost like walking in and taking all your clothes off. It's formidable and addictive. Cooper is already signed up to work on the director's next film in about an FBI sting operation in the s, starring alongside Christian Bale, Jeremy Renner and Amy Adams. But how did he approach playing a character with a mental illness? We looked at a lot of videos and documentaries and literature and at whatever connections personally we could make.
He says he discovered a lot about the character once the filming had started. Initially he was a little Asperger-y and we thought that's not going to sustain for a whole movie - the audience will be empty by the end of it.
It was about finding the right balance. Among his other film projects are indie drama Serena, set in depression-era North Carolina, in which Cooper reunites with Lawrence to play newlyweds looking to make their fortune in the timber business.

What we have here is just your regular Russell arena of families racketing around, scrapping and colliding, filters off, hackles up. This is film-making with zero tolerance for flab or indulgence; scratchy and macho, aggressive and abrasive, yet still as brimful of real feeling as it is apparently uncaring what you make of it.
The camera ducks and dives with the action, right in your face, smarting as it charms. That's not always the nicest sensation, and it's possible it might have knocked the wind from Silver Linings's box-office sails. For those who liked The Fighter, this could have come as a bit of a schlocker.
Those approaching from the Hangover angle might too have been stopped in their tracks. Yet I'd still recommend this film to everyone and anyone.
