This is particularly true when mist pervades the scene in the early morning or after rain. It soon becomes apparent that the claim to being one of the two most beautiful towns in the whole of China is more than justified; the other town is Chang Ting in Fujian Province. Fenghuang Ancient Town was home to the versatile writer Shen Congwen who contributed greatly to the development of modern Chinese literature.
Venerated by the local residents, the one time home and the tomb of this famous writer have become tourist attractions. There are two other notable people from the town worthy of mention. The first is Xiong Xiling the famous philanthropist who was the first premier of the Republic of China following the fall of the Manchu. The other famous citizen is Huang Yongyu, an outstanding contemporary painter in the traditional Chinese style. His frescoes illustrating Buddhist stories in the Zhunti Nunnery are a major tourist attraction.

Former Residence of Shen Congwen Shen Congwen, a great master of Chinese literature, left his childhood memory in this residence since to With a modest size, the wooden houses are roofed with dark gray tiles. The courtyard is paved with dark gray stone slabs with a large water vat in the middle.
According to its architectural style, this residence is a south courtyard which is different from northern ones. This Xiangxi architecture was built in Qing Dynasty, so people can trace the architectural style in that period from it. Although there is no airport or train station in Fenghuang County, it is quite convenient to go to Fenghuang from nearby cities like Changsha, Huaihua, Jishou, Tongren and Zhangjiajie.
The nearest airport Fenghuang Airport in Tongren City is only 34km away from Fenghuang County and the nearest train station in Jishou City is only 50km away. As its schedule might change sometimes, you may check the bus schedule and book the bus tickets upon your arrival in the bus station.
From Huaiyuan: There are some high-speed train traveling between Huaihua and some other cities, such Shanghai, Changsha. There are tons of little alleys and old streets waiting to be explored! I spent a lot of time wandering around taking photos, trying some snacks, and browsing local shops. Little fish pedicure shops are all over the streets of Fenghuang!
These fish will nibble at your feet — it tickles a bit at first and is a little strange, but really fun! You can pay around 30 RMB for 30 minutes and relax after walking around. I thought it was really funny and ironic that next door to this shop was a restaurant with big fish tanks where you could choose which fish to eat instead of the fish nibbling on you! Classic China. Fenghuang is beautiful during the day, but the night-time is when it really comes alive! The entire riverside area lights up and there are tons of restaurants and bars that will play live music and have parties.
I ventured into a place and ended up becoming friends with some nice Chinese guys inside. They asked me to join their table and enjoy the live music. It turned out one of the guys was the owner and I asked if the singer would take requests. They said yes of course! As the night went on the owner had to help run the place, but he and his friends were so fun and hospitable.
After a few more songs he asked me if I would sing a song — all my Chinese KTV experience prepared me for this moment. I sang my favorite Chinese song Ni Zhan. It was just a super fun low key Chinese bar and it was the perfect way to enjoy Fenghuang at night.
It can be a confusing process making sure you get the right bus tickets, directions, etc. Plan ahead and be prepared! Just make sure to do careful planning ahead of time, get all locations and addresses in Chinese, and make sure you have an offline translation app. Take an interest in their culture!
