I sought safety in my technology marketing career. On August 24th, , at 5 pm, while waiting in my Prius to make one final turn into my neighborhood, I was in heavy traffic. What happened? Take a guess! I was rear-ended by a Jeep and sandwiched between two SUVs. I suffered a concussion and some injuries. For four weeks, I was unable to work and stayed home. You bet! Bad things may happen to you to slow you down, to quiet your psyche, to force you to answer when God calls.
It happens through the Holy Spirit, once you give your life to Christ. Read His word. Silence the worldly chatter. Escape distractions. I prayed for less anger and more patience, and you gave me a flooded house. I was so confused at first but having reviewed my life, I understood you. I examined my prayers and your answers and finally I got the divine clue. You gave me a cruel husband to reveal your wisdom and bless me with reassurance… That my life is guided by you and that your plan for me is truly good.
Facing my flooded home without any anger today, your ways I understood. God, thank you for answering my prayers in your unconventional and divine way. I surrender to you, I follow you, your will and guidance with gratitude I obey.

Do you know the purpose of YOUR life? They insisted that we ordain another elder who would always be there. However, being a man, I went with logic instead of my heart. Within two weeks of the others leaving for wheat harvest, this new elder turned into the devil himself. In his reports to the elders, he accused me of stealing money from the church, committing adultery, drinking, smoking, and everything else you can imagine.
It was a terrible experience. As soon as this man showed his true colors, I knew in my heart that the feelings and thoughts I had were the Lord speaking to me, and I had dismissed them as my own.
I made a decision right then and there that I would never ignore my heart again. This verse has often been interpreted to mean that the Lord will give you whatever you want and has been used to justify selfishness, greed, and even adultery. He will make His desires become your desires.
I once was planning a trip to Costa Rica, a place I had been before, and was excited to be returning to. Yet, as I prayed about it, I lost my desire to go. Instead, I actually felt dread about going. The first thing I did when that happened was make sure I was really seeking the Lord with my whole heart. While on a road trip, I spent seventeen hours praying in tongues, and the more I got my mind stayed on the Lord, the less I wanted to go back to Costa Rica.
On the strength of that alone, I canceled the trip. The plane I had booked my flight on crashed on take-off from Mexico City, killing all persons onboard. The good news is that God is always wanting to hear from us and speak to us. God is constantly speaking to people. They start to wonder how to hear from God and why they aren't.
The key is to forget about formulas and gimmicks for hearing from God, and to focus instead on developing the kind of relationship with God that will empower you to hear God speaking regularly. The closer you get to God, the more you can enjoy ongoing conversations with Him, both listening and hearing from Him, and the more God will use those conversations to transform you into the person He wants you to become.
By design, the way you hear best from God is in the context of a friendship with Him. He wants to give you wisdom to lead your family, at your job, in your church, and in every area of life. Starting in this passage and throughout the rest of his life, Samuel consistently obeyed the Lord. No matter what God told him, Samuel did it. If you want to hear from God, you have to know what the Bible says. God is speaking. The question we have to ask ourselves is not is God speaking, but are we listening?
