What is Asynchronous Counter? Difference between Synchronous and Asynchronous Counter Clock Input — In a synchronous counter, the same source is used by the clock input across all the flip-flops, creating the same signal at the same time, meaning the counter is clocked in such a way that each flip-flop in the counter is triggered by the same clock signal at the same time.
Operation — All the flip-flops are clocked at the same time, thus a synchronous counter with the same number and type of flip-flops can operate at much higher clock frequencies than its asynchronous counterpart.
Time Delay — Because the clock signal in a synchronous counter is applied to the clock inputs of all the flip-flops at the same time, there is no time lag between the different outputs.
While on other hand Asynchronous Counter is more error prone and produces decoding error in the system. As all flip flops are being coordinating with the clock hence the design and implementation is complex as compared to that of Asynchronous Counter.
On other hand as output of one flip flop performing as input of next flip flop the design and implementation is quite simple in case of Asynchronous counter.
Synchronous Counter could be operated in any desired count sequence as it could get manipulated by changing the clock sequence. In the synchronous counter, all the flip-flops in the cascade network are independently linked to an external clock. This supports the clocking of all the flip-flops constituting the counter simultaneously instant with a similar clock input. This represents the output of each flip-flop change in synchronization with the clock input. In the synchronous counter, the similar clock pulse is moved to the clock input of all the flip-flops.
The clock signals make by all the flip-flops are equal to each other. The asynchronous counter is also called the ripple counter.
